    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

Can we do a better job of finding truth? YES. Click "rshow55" for some things Lchic and I have done and worked for on this thread.

Osprey - forged maintenance logs. And, to its credit - the Marine Corps did respond.

At the same time, US institutions, including the United States Marine Corps as it deals with the Osprey matter, are showing how good the United States can be, and offering both good examples, and hope.

In the Osprey records falsification case, The United States Marine Corps has responded in what appears to be an exemplary fashion to such challenges. People are being held responsible, and a broad, careful investigation is being done.

. . . If the Marine Corps can stand up to unpleasant circumstances in the Osprey case, as it seems to be doing, key technical problems in the missile defense program may be adressable, too.

Sometimes "the system" cleans up itself, to some degree.

Now that there's A Final Push for the Bedeviled, Beloved Osprey By LESLIE WAYNE http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/06/business/06CHOP.html - responsible legislators - who often fight for sums much smaller than the 48 billion dollars involved here - ought to look carefully at what's involved here.

There are some tough, honest, capable people involved with the Osprey program. It seems likely that the Marines have been watching the contractors involved closely - and watching their own test programs closely. Some very tough tactical and strategic judgements are involved.

If the United States needs this capability - at b this price - ( more than 12 billion has been spent - and 458 Ospreys will cost 48 billion ) then we ought to think and work hard to find ways to make it less precarious.
