Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

So far as I can tell, it seems that what is reported here is exactly consistent with the hard work and careful bargaining that will be needed to sort out the Iraq mess neatly.

U.S. Revision to Delay Iraq Vote Filed at 7:58 a.m. ET

"WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.N. action on Iraq will be delayed beyond next week's U.S. midterm elections as the Bush administration, in a bid for French and Russian support, revises its resolution calling for new weapons inspections.

"Secretary of State Colin Powell discussed the U.S. strategy by telephone with Foreign Ministers Igor Ivanov of Russia and Dominique de Villepin of France.

"On Friday, Russia's Interfax news agency quoted Ivanov as saying the members of the U.N. Security Council have made significant progress on a resolution.

"``In the last few days we have succeeded in bringing the approaches of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council ... closer,'' Ivanov was quoted as saying. ``We have converged on a whole series of positions.''

There is time for clarity - so that things work well, when the time to put plans in action comes.

I hope the right decisions are being made, on all the significant details that matter. And that human needs - including an aesthetic sense, and empathy - are remembered. From this distance, progress looks good.

I first posted this basic material on this thread 22 May, 2001 - - and this text is modified from Mankind's Inhumanity to Man and Woman - as natural as human goodness?

When complicated negotiations are necessary - - when we must build shared space - and come up with solutions that are at least good enough - the question "what would a good solution be, from the point of view of the people involved" is both an aesthetic and a technical question. A very practical question. Lchic and I have worked to make the technical aspects of that question sharper - in ways that I think can be useful, and fit here.

I posted this on There's Poetry -and I'm posting it here. It comes from the "hypothesis ...." thread in Europe, started by Beckvaa . It represents, we believe, a reframing of the notion of scientific theory, that, if it were adopted, might much reduce the probablility and seriousness of paradigm conflict impasses. . .
