    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

Can we do a better job of finding truth? YES. Click "rshow55" for some things Lchic and I have done and worked for on this thread.

Almarst 8834:

" its about REGIME CHANGE ... no, its about WMD ... sorry, we mean Ben Ladden ... or isn't it really about what all the rest of the World think?"

To an enormous extent - the current crises - and the fact that peaceful solutions that seem close are somehow avoided - is about the massive size of the US military-industrial complex - and the need that thousands and millions of Americans associated with it have to justify continued conflict.

Since 9/11, including 9/ll - there have been under 3500 deaths from Al Queda - and during that time, the military-industrial complex has spent over 400 billion dollars - - more than a hundred million dollars per death. Of course Al Queda is a problem. Of course there are other military problems.

But the massive size of the US military complex is now out of control - and if it is to be controlled - and if it is to be questioned effectively - power from outside of America will have to be brought to bear.

If we faced up to key facts - and some basic matters of history - every security need of the United States could be well solved - the world could be a much safer - more prosperous place - and the United States would discover that it had a lot of resources available for meeting American needs - and other needs in the world.

Questions that almarst has been asking on this thread since March 2001 are well worth asking (for example, see some links in 8829 http://forums.nytimes.com/webin/WebX?8@28.vbc5ahfT3dJ.0@.f28e622/10355 ) . The things that Eisenhower warned about in his Farewell Address have happened 8802 http://forums.nytimes.com/webin/WebX?8@28.vbc5ahfT3dJ.0@.f28e622/10328

Vision Statements are often hidden - because they relate to the leapfrogging of entities as against others .... the 'advantages' held like cards close to the chest (unseen).

Vision Statements may be for the immediate future .. or towards shaping the entity over a one hundred year cycle.

If the world could pause for a moment and ask of itself:

What are the long and short term current vision statements held by Nations, Companies, cultures and individuals ....

WHERE does everyone (each) think they are going ...

HOW do they think they'll get there (achieve)

WHO's going with them ... (The TEAM)

WHAT does each hope to gain

WHY do they hold a vision

WHEN do they think they will achieve their vision

REVISE - how often will it be necessary to revise their vision as circumstance and environment change, change for better, for worse, different, change

An individual inside | USA, Iraq, UK, France, Germany, North Korea, Cuba ....

What vision of the future do they hold

What vision of the future does their government hold

?

Are the 'visions' of each in the world

in alignment

with the 'visions' of others ?
