    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

Debris _ Shuttle

The fallout of debris from the 'old grey lady' covers an area the size of England.

The debris is toxic, dangerous, small metal pieces ...

Could be picked up now ... or at anytime into the future ... by say a small child ... the 'fallout' is 'ongoing' in it's potential danger to human life - Huston area - Texas.

A time to reflect on the debris left in some of the 250 war sites the USA has been involved with since the end of WWII

Land mines

Cluster bombs

Missile debris

Bomb cases

Little cleared - all a legacy for the world's children in the 'ELSEWHERE' zone

Now let's watch and compare the concern for the Texas Children as against US concern for the generations of 'Elsewhere' children - deaths, legs blown off, contamination ....

Why two standards?

Shuttle discussion - Space Exploration - begins here :

It is the business of the future to be dangerous...The major advances in civilization are processes that all but wreck the societies in which they occur.

Oh my god. We have lost one of our shuttles.

Showalter, skimming through some of the SpaceExploration|Shuttle postings one notes:

  • contributions from a vast array of NYT readers
  • each makes their 'major' point - fast
  • range of issues arising
  • National pride - budget
  • Alternative use of funds

A lot is being 'put down fast' on the E-S thread, a analysis of it would bring out the KEY ISSUES CONCERNS of the public

The 'gut wave' of emotion on this issue is enormous .... is it 5 visually-dead Americans (?)

Now turning to the issue of the WAR with IRAQ and numbers of potential bodybags ... how will the US public take it?

"Quae cum ita sunt" Caesar's Gallic Commentaries

lchic: Cooper was wrong when he called you a putz. You are a hurtful bitch! Space University is alive as long as I dream the dream. Ordinarily, I don't call names, (except when provoked by the likes of lchic), dip people in acid, (Saddam), starve men women and children, (Kim Il Jung) and enslave, (many Dictators!).

You're Australian. Why don't you deal with the treatment of you "Aborigines" Is this something you can point to with pride. I suspect you, with all the intellect you can muster, will somehow find that the US is at fault for your failings.

The road to the stars is marked by the steadfastness and sacrifice of the explorers among us. May the Colombia crew rest in peace, knowing that we will not falter.

    Lou Mazza, Space Cadet!
