    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

"You can't eat this, it's people, it's people"-B....."What about the cherry pie?"

I think that, if the Res Club fire had not killed her, and nearly killed me - that Marti and I could have worked out a solution beautiful from many,

The US is trying to achieve stability - and "weapons" that violate the 1st and 2nd law of thermo mostly show how afraid people are.

The US is doing everything that guarantees instability. But it seems reasonable to assume that pumping a billion watts into an atmospheric wave guide could do some damage without breaking the laws of thermodynamics. Resonance and lensing effects can be easily imagined - especially with the three widely spaced transmitters that are being used. And if so innocent, why the secrecy?

Have a good rest, and manju permitting, I'd find details of that Iraqi simulation inplausible but fascinating.

    Peace, brothers and sisters.

America a la Bush IS THE threat to world stability right now.

    commondata - 07:41pm Jan 15, 2003 EST (# 7693 of 7706)

And everybody but America-a-la-Bush knows it.

    Peace, brothers and sisters.

Peace rallies are starting nationwide, to counter the warmongering hype pushed by Bush and his media stooges.

    Peace, brothers and sisters.

Both Saddam and Bush, whatever they do - have to work very carefully - ..."

Especially Saddam. I heard his speech on the anniversary of his army a while back. For a secular leader, he sure did invoke Allah an awful lot.

"...because of switching signals - some being sent by people who want ugly fights - keep disturbing the system..."

What "switching signals" are you talking about, Robert? What system? Saddam surely does seem to want an ugly fight. If it comes to a fight I suspect it will be a lot uglier for him this time than it was last time. I think the man's a masochist.

"...The Palestinian mess is a big part of the problem - ..."

That's because Saddam is a pillar of support for Palestinian radical groups. So long as they are funded and rewarded by him, there will be no honest negotiaton between Israel and the Palestinians.

"...and the Saudis, who are very helpful sometimes, are about as helpful as a malicious mother in law at other times..."

Saudi Arabia is the home of Bin Laden, most of the September 11 hijackers and the radical Madrassa culture that is at the foundation of Al Qaida. Can't help but wonder about that.
