    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

Lou Mazza or Commondata:

Why were the SCUDs apparently hidden aboard the tanker under bags of cement? Why the effort to conceal them as if they were contraband?

If it could be show that they were intended for delivery to a terrorist organization or a rogue state, I would approve of the seizure. Otherwise, I don't think the U.S. has a right to keep possession of the missiles.

"There are things that people are going to be willing to fight about"

I am very interested to know what Americans where fighting for in the past century.

Can we do a better job of finding truth? YES. Click "rshow55" for some things Lchic and I have done and worked for on this thread.

almarst2002 12/11/02 4:55pm . . . that would be a very interesting history to set out and discuss - with your point of view vigorously represented.

I think American military actions have made a great deal of sense - a great deal of the time - and think most people in the world agree.

If you can argue that they've been at a lower moral level than the military actions of other nation states over the same time - - I'd like to hear the argument. I'd listen hard.

It might civilize all concerned to have a better, more complete airing of the questions you raise - in detail. There are certainly trained people around the world - not too busy - who could do a thorough job of compling such a record, and connected arguments - given some money - and some ground rules. Putin, for example, could probably pick up the phone and organize it - getting the money from wealthy individuals - if he wished. Other leaders could, too.

And yes, I've heard of "wholistic medicine.'

And I personally have been concentrating on negotiations - alternatives to what you refer to as "surgery."

I am lost on this. Could you name jast a few?

In my view, the only just war is the war to repel the agression, economical blocade or at least a preemptive against an imminent agression by a much stronger opponent. And ABSOLUTLY nothing else.

We don't agree. And I don't think your position permits stable human relations.

But let me post this - and leave off for a while, to talk to lunarchick.
