    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

Saddam has money - money can buy good advice from both critcal historians ... who can show the mistakes of the past ... and from futurists who can show him 'the way' to a better future for Iraq.

A smart Saddam would out fox the 'Hawks' by flying with the 'Doves'

Were Saddam to welcome the inspection ... get the country immediately opened up, and back into commercial trading and production, then for Iraq he would be performing the greatest service.

Leaders should SERVE their people.

He would also put himself into the position of a more respected Arab leader - amongst arab nations.

He would then, using wisdom, have the power to demand that the USA get rid of it's weapons of mass distruction.

He should look to the advances now being made towards democracy in Bharain, in Cassablanca Morroco.

He should think 'how better' could this and more be done for Iraq.

Historically as Persia - the country had power and prestige - (horrors of techniques of war apart).

"If Iraq refuses - many, many hopeful possibilities will be shut off - and a lot of agony, loss and injustice will be guaranteed."

The same will happen if it does not. Only will make the aggression costlier. Which may eventualy be a good thing. Unfortunatly.

There is no way one can appease the growing apetite of the World's rullers to be. Armed with such unprecedented military and financial power. Urgent to grab a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to the fullest.

Can we do a better job of finding truth? YES. Click "rshow55" for some things Lchic and I have done and worked for on this thread.

almarst2002 11/11/02 9:00pm . . . I can understand the bitterness - but, though there are exceptions - the US often does and has served as a force for peace and democracy in the world.

We're not talking conquest here - not if people keep their heads.

We're talking weapons inspections on the basis of promises long made - - and the inspections are under the auspices of the United Nations which, weak as it is - is a force for peace and hope in the world.

"Leaders should SERVE their people."

Shouldn't that apply also to the West and the US in particular?

Secondly, if one believe we live in the same World village, shouldn't we behave as such? Unless the village is located in a Holliwood recreated West.

Almarst - - we don't agree on some things - but let's suppose that you're right - that the US is "bent on conquest"

The very best way to deal with it would be for the inspections to go on - making every effort to make them work - so that the US could only violate them by showing bad faith to the whole world.

You might be surprised, and get good faith. Or good enough faith for practical purposes.

American POWER - what is it?

America enjoys peace on their 360 degree border - No threat from either ocean, nor Canada ... nor Mexico ... nor Cuba.

Russia has been subject to shifting empires over-running it - inflicting terror.

It would follow then that Russia would have concerns at the development of a new Empire, a sky Empire, a non-stoppable force of mis-placed Arrogance.
