    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Can we do a better job of finding truth? YES. Click "rshow55" for some things Lchic and I have done and worked for on this thread.

I think the Rangers are lucky to get Buck Showalter.

mazza9 10/11/02 11:42am : " ...."Truth, Justice and the American Way" will triumph. "

The emotive slogan in "Superman" comics, and movies, is

" Truth, justice, and the American way . . . "

For any workable way of life, truth has to be fundamental-- because decisions have to be made, and people have to be able to cooperate and act in good faith.

Sometimes, America needs to be more careful about living up to its slogans.

. TRUTH, RIGHT AND THE AMERICAN WAY A Nation Defined by Its Enemies by ROBERT F. WORTH http://www.nytimes.com/2002/02/24/weekinreview/24WORT.html

If our objective is reducing our risk, and the world's risk, from weapons of mass destruction, we need solutions that are workable in technical and human terms.

Some things matter enough that they are worth checking. The stakes for the United States make these matters worth checking: http://talk.guardian.co.uk/WebX?14@@.ee7a163/352

The technical issues don't depend on whether you "call me Ishmael" or not http://talk.guardian.co.uk/WebX?14@@.ee7a163/289

Casey had his faults - and he'd exploit myths, and lie when he thought the particular ends did in fact justify particular means. But he was careful. (A good political mind, too - he managed Reagan's 1981 campaign.)

This is a very good 38 minute speech from Casey:

William Casey
Director, Central Intelligence Agency
Major Issues Lecture Series
Asbrook Center for Public Affairs at Ashland University

Topic: The Status of U.S. Intelligence in the U.S. Today October 27, 1986 http://www.ashbrook.org/sounds/ram/casey_86-10-27_speech.ram http://www.ashbrook.org/events/lecture/1986/casey.html

Other Casey references - not all complementary - but interesting.

lchic's Science-in-the-News-thread post that has an MD-wastage aspect :

    data | pattern | idea | value | invention | innovation | process : production : marketing : distribution : sales | data | pattern | improved idea | quality improvement | invention | innovation
So here's where the government could come in see $
    Research $ Time | data $|$ pattern $|$ idea | value | invention $|$ innovation $|$ process : production : marketing : distribution : sales | data | pattern |$ improved idea | quality improvement $|$ invention $|$ innovation
The dollar from 'central taxation - everybody' used astutely can assist processes that lead to 'renewal' of an economy as expressed in jobs
Where a central body helps process, it may be possible later in the process to bring in private and commerical interests -- restoring dollars directly or indirectly to central-taxation
So who was it who said science and politics had no relationship?
Looking at science and engineering tied up in white elephant projects --- perhaps the human capital could be re-directed into projects that have value for humankind.

Commentators seem to be saying

Seem to hint that

The vote for Isalm Parties ... is really a vote against the USA

So the USA might do better to pay it's UN dues and let the UN 'work' using appropriate guidelines.
