    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

It's my contention that this thread is about 'states of mind'

Vygotsky influenced modern constructivist thinking perhaps more that any other individual.
Vygotsky contended that, unlike animals - who react only to the environment, humans have the capacity to alter the environment for their own purposes.
It is this adaptive capacity that distinguishes humans from lower forms of life.
One of his central contributions to psychological thought was his emphasis on socially meaningful activity as an important influence on human consciousness.
Vygotsky's most controversial contention was that all higher mental functions originate in the social environment.
His approach to intelligence emphasized intelligence as a process activity rather than a state entity.

Putting this into an MD context - how socially meaningful is it to have silos with nuclear missiles in them ready to fire ?

If humans have the capacity to alter the environment for their own purposes - then shouldn't these purposes be for the good - not destruction - of humanity!

Showalter stated here that many things, including teaching kids to read successfully, can be done more effectively ....

can be done more efficiently ....

Showalter also notes that MD is in a muddled mess - and the reason?

The reason is that the dots of truth need dusting down to give a clear picture, to find the real base, to see what is happening and why.

Knowing 'truth' it would then be possible to better plan and use national resources.

He's also said that engineers might be better deployed to assist in solving global environmental problems - haven't we all noticed them in the news this week!

I'm Not going to argue about the relative merits of utopia.

We're just now entering a dangerous new period of instability after a 50 year Cold War with the Russians. As long as there are those who want to turn the world into a concentration camp or worse, the bombers and missiles will STAY on High Alert.

You KNOW the drill......What's the MATTER with you, anyway?!?!?
