    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

Recently, Michael Moore had the #1 bestseller, and now it is Ann Coulter. She's covered today in AN EVENING OUT Ann Coulter By KATE ZERNIKE http://www.nytimes.com/2002/08/11/fashion/11NITE.html

I suspect that Ann Coulter found this thread interesting, for reasons that are partly logical, but partly statistical. They offer an interesting example about checking, I think.

    rshowalter - 12:13pm Oct 9, 2001 EST (#10204 included this:

"I usually don't go back and look about how postings can change - instead, I usually read them in downloaded form. But old postings can change - for instance, a poster can change contact information.

"I notice that kangdawei now has a "contact heading" of http://www.uclick.com/client/cap/ac/2001/09/26/index.html which connects to Ann Coulter. Now that isn't certain evidence that kangdawei is Coulter - but it is a connection -- and I expect, after a little thought, to contact Ann Coulter and see if we have something to talk about.

I'd like to do that for a lot of reasons -- including some mixed motives - - she's a good looking lady -- maybe even better looking than Ms Rice !

Coulter's writings are entertaining, too. And well written in ways that I wouldn't know how to match, though it would be fun to learn, except that it might get too complicated, everything considered . . . .

But maybe we could have a date. I could take her to the Patent Office, for a day of real searching - - on something specific - - maybe two days. So she could learn what "impossible" means . .

and what hope means, too, in technical fields.

Just a thought. I need to read some of her stuff, and collect my courage, before I call her - - then, just my luck, she'll be unavailable.

I made an effort to contact Coulter through a number of channels, including web contacts and phone calls. I believe that she listened to me over her answer phone, without commenting. I think I can fairly say that Ann Coulter, according to journalistic usages of the phrase, "made herself unavailable."

She had every right to do so.

But I was sorry that we couldn't make better contact --- even to deny that she was "kandawei" . It seemed a reasonable inference, both from the contact line http://www.uclick.com/client/cap/ac/2001/09/26/index.html and from the writing style of the postings - that "kangdawei" was Ann Coulter. There were 45 "kangdawei" postings - that I show below (they are available on the archive CD) along with boded posting responding to "kangdawei" by two posters I respect a great deal -- applez and almarst.

Within a day after my efforts to contact Ann Coulter, http://www.uclick.com/client/cap/ac/2001/09/26/index.html ceased to work.

kangdawei's postings, which I have on CD, make interesting reading. She worked hard:
