    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

Those patterns you call "really old windmills " need some re-examination.

I promised to try to sort the problem out - and on this thread I've done my best to do so. I think I've made some headway, too.

I'd love a situation where everybody involved could have their needs served - and could be proud of solutions that were useful.

If we're going to have a fight - it is set up to be an interesting fight.

These are interesting, valid questions:

Bluestar23 , are you a legitimate representative of The New York Times - and do responsible NYT officers know who you are - and approve of your postings?

Yes or no ?

Any of these answers - clearly set out - in writing - from a responsible member of the "control group" of the New York Times Company - would clarify a good deal that matters to me as a human being who has to live with administrative usages.

It would be progress for me, whichever determination was given.

Though what the answer would be would make a difference.

We're heading into a situation where some new law might get made, under easily imaginable circumstances.

I'd rather do it as a demonstration of complex negotiation - showing how problems that stumped Nash can be solved by series solutions - sometimes with oscillatory elements and assemblies.

But with stable answers at most nodes that matter. And rules for the oscillations at most oscillating nodes. Though some statistical oscillation is tolerable, and can even be useful.

For that demonstration, I need to meet a member of the NYT organization - face to face - and work a little while.

Preferably, for grammatical reasons, somebody female. Morgenson, for example. Any chaperoning anybody wants would be OK by me - but I'd want the logical-grammatical skills women have at avoiding fights.

Because I'm trying to avoid fights. Including big ones.

But also I need to be able to function.

And it happens I know a lot about what I need.

An hour meeting might be enough.

A day would be better - and should certainly be enough.

With great luck , it could be done with a phone call - but I don't feel so lucky.

If I am put into a situation where I don't think I can function then I will decide to fight.

That seems fair to me - and it is my decision to make.

I'd rather avoid conflict, for obvious reasons.

Sulzberger's secretary would be a good person to meet with, too. Not to make a decision - but to work out something that would fit Sulzberger's needs - she'd know a great deal about how to please him.

That's something I'd like to do, too - if I could meet my own needs as well.
