    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

There's resentment down deep but people don't know what to do with it. A lot of people turn inward, rather than outward. You think it would be ripe for an outcry. But it's not, it's all kind of dulled,"

I recall watching a documentary on the tragedy of North Koreans starving to death ... they too were dulled!

Since the end of the cold war and the almost universal collapse of communism the circumstances have existed for a massive transfer of arms expenditure towards increases in development aid to help bridge the gap in living standards between the world’s richest and poorest countries. http://www.actu.asn.au/public/international/arms.html

(from above): The Marshall Institute:

"The scientific and technological questions underlying national missile defense have been a core concern of the Institute since its founding. Over the years, the Marshall Institute has examined the scientific and technical feasibility of missile defense systems as well as provided forums for leading policy makers to educate the scientific community and media about the nature of missile threats facing the United States."
