    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

Can we do a better job of finding truth? YES. Click "rshow55" for some things Lchic and I have done and worked for on this thread.

Bill Clinton put together a "very good deal" between Israel and Palestine - under circumstances as they were - maybe an "unimprovable" deal - in terms of a written agreement.

Nobody knew how to STABILIZE it - and look what's happened.

The deal between the Israelis and Palestinians was inherently unstable as it was, without specific patterns of stabilization that as a technical matter - and an emotional matter, too - the people involved didn't know how to implement.

Now, not even Friedman understands how stabilization of complicated deals has to work - but he easily could - and others could - if some things set out on this board could be checked and discussed in ways that are now too constrained.

Lchic and I have been working very hard - for a long time - to sort out problems that ought to be old and obvious - but aren't. http://www.mrshowalter.net/rshow55.htm

If people just keep their heads - at the NYT at least - I think we're close to a situation where we can accomplish some things of lasting benefit to human beings - both Americans and others. In ways that ought to bring honor (and maybe even some money) to the NYT.

Anybody who want's to "call me Ishmael" can do so - that part of my story doesn't matter so much for the things people ought to care about most. http://www.mrshowalter.net/CoreStory.html My government involvement does matter to me, and matters for some life-and-death things. I think the story bears checking. For that, people have to be willing to talk to me - sometimes face to face.

There are times when exception handling has to work - and people have to exercise judgement.

I think Pros at the Con By MAUREEN DOWD http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/02/opinion/02DOWD.html is superb.

I'd like to make a simple point that shouldn't offend Dowd. If Dowd WANTED to perpetrate a con she'd KNOW HOW TO DO IT.

She couldn't be as good as she was, otherwise.

But if checking patterns were sensible - not even Dowd could do it.

It is entirely "rational" to want you and your moron-friend Showalter OFF THIS BOARD for GOOD...just stop your non-MD posts because you're on an MD forum, repeat an MD forum....we don't want to hear about people's personal lives...just shutup and go awawy..

bluestar23 - 07:54am Nov 2, 2003 EST (# 16173 of 16228)

Showalter...stop repeating your nonsense and don't post unless you have something to say about MD and Only MD....

The stakes are pretty high - and by now, the NYT may be explaining more than it might want to about how much the usages of the Cold War have compromised the patterns of trust its franchise is built on. There are things to be fixed. http://www.mrshowalter.net/Sequential.htm
