Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a
nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a
"Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed
considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense
initiatives more successful? Can such an application of
science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable,
necessary or impossible?

from above:
North tests a missile, defense ministry says
North Korea test-fired a ground-to-ship missile toward the
East Sea (Sea of Japan) around noon yesterday, South Korea¡¯s
Ministry of National Defense said.
¡°The missile launch is suspected as part of a test to
develop modified versions of anti-ship missiles,¡± a senior
defense ministry official said. ¡°North Korea¡¯s missile test
is part of its annual military activities. They have
test-fired missiles multiple times during the first half of
this year.¡±
Pyeongyang has imposed a self-moratorium on its long-range
missile tests, but conducted short-range missile tests earlier
this year. The missile was fired from the North¡¯s
northeastern coast, but it was not yet confirmed whether the
test was a success or not, the official added.
Officials declined to further identify the type of the
missile, but military experts believed that the North tested
its Seersucker, a version of the Chinese-built Silkworm. The
North already test-fired the 160-kilometer (100-mile) range
missiles in February and March this year into the waters off
the peninsula¡¯s east coast.

Back in 1997, the influential German journal Der Spiegel
observed that: "Never before in modern history has a country
dominated the Earth so totally as the United States does
today. America is now the Schwarzenegger of international
politics, showing off muscles, obtrusive, intimidating."
