Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a
nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a
"Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed
considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense
initiatives more successful? Can such an application of
science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable,
necessary or impossible?

Fighting Through
"" Our minds are complex. When dealing with issues, we draw
freely on many different attributes, and employ them in
varying combinations.
If we give you a series of numbers and asked you to add
them up, you'd draw on your arithmetical knowledge. No
emotional investment would be needed to solve this problem.
If you turned on the evening news and film footage showed
some 12-year old kid shooting up his junior high school with
an assault rifle, your response would be emotional.
You'd have plenty of targets for your anger, too.
There's the kid; that's anger target number one.
What about the ease with which these weapons can be
acquired?
They're apparently so easily gotten that even a 12-year old
can score.
What about the parents? Can't you direct some anger towards
them for the abysmally poor job they did of instilling any
morality whatsoever into their offspring?
You get the point. Some things are logical. Others grab you
by the guts.

What were the basic common goals of reforms in the region?
The
reforms had three central purposes:
1) to increase individual
freedom and to protect individual and especially human
rights
(democratization process),
2) to introduce free market economy,
3) to settle basis for a higher standard of living for all
social
strata of the society.
To achieve these goals it was necessary first to abolish
the
previous political system and then to make labor markets
more
effective, including the increase of individual choice,
extending
the role of private and reducing the state sector, to
improve and
adjust education and training to new needs, to cope with
unemployment and poverty and to promote better health.

Simple slogans and sentences may encapsulate an attitudinal
response, one country / one culture to another.
America might best consider why the slogans http://www.forward.com/issues/2003/03.04.11/news1.html
emerge, their roots, the reasons why.
Understanding the grass-roots of discontent ... and working
towards an improvement in attitudes is ultimately the better
way forward.

In his latest book M. Moore points out that only 8% of
Americans have 'ever' had a passport! WOW!
Moore comments that Americans are an 'Ignorant' nation as
cp to other passported, travelled peoples.
His comment not mine.

How do Americans change simplex minds to understanding of
the complexity of modern society .... and move the ball out of
the first world court and into their own?
