Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a
nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a
"Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed
considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense
initiatives more successful? Can such an application of
science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable,
necessary or impossible?

[to bluestar23] - I did call. Talked to a
secretary who was helpful - but said the big boss was in a
meeting - and I was grateful to get his e-mail adress.
Now comes Step 2. Send an email.
The fact is, so much hinges on this thing
for me that I've got a lot of emotions involved. That's a
problem when people try to sort out anything that might
involve mutual threat.
What "mutual threat" ? What 'threat' do you think faces NYT
? You keep sending these 'veiled' messages. We know YOU're
caught up in lot of personal considerations and emotions --
valid or not.
Even though implicit but large threats are
built into very many of the human interactions we live with
and handle well. And the fact is, mutual threats - or at
least a balance of plusses and minuses - is built into any
stable interaction that is more than rape.
I see NO mutual "threats" here, "large" or small. Whether
your own interersts are threatened in any anyway, it's up to
you to consider.
Because of the way people behave when
emotions are running - irrationally - there are many more
negative sum games than they need to be, because these
things aren't sorted out better. When emotions are high -
people regress as logical beings. Not only me. So it is a
strain to sort things out that look easier from a distance.
And not only for me. Emotions run high, and not only mine.
That's a problem in all sorts of situations. I've been
sorting things out - with small steps - as fast as I've
known how to and dared - and I know I haven't been wasting
the important man's time - since I have to assume that he's
not posting on this board.
The ONLY person whose emotions are and have been "running
irrationally" and "high" are YOURS, and yours alone (along
with lchic's, obviously).
The word "condescending" was used by Cantabb
- and I'm sorry he feels that way about my responses - which
are intended to be clear and respectful.
You portray as if posters' comments (or news reports etc)
have to get your nod or your favored attention. Preposterous !
The NYT has a problem - and the whole world
has a problem (as well as a huge advantage) because the NYT
is now, and has been for a while - the intellectual source
that is the most steadily infuential in the country. Nobody
much condescends to the the TIMES - but there are
awkwardnesses dealing with so much power.
We ALL have problems --INCLUDING you !
Particularly, you, in this case ! And, it's YOUR
problem, more than any one else's that should matter to you.
[btw, WHAT problem do you think NYT has in THIS case with you
?]
My respect for the TIMES, and the people who
make it run, is enormous.
SO ? Do you have a problem with them or NOT ? If
yes, let THEM know ! Forget the "enormous respect" which seems
to alternate with how you think NYT has done you wrong and
should be "ashamed" of it.

''The ideal of cross-national cultural communication and
understanding, of course, was compromised by the geopolitical
realities of the cold war, as the United States and the Soviet
Union waged what has been called World War III on all fronts.
Cultural activities, ranging from intelligence gathering and
propaganda in the media to student exchanges and subsidies to
foreign intellectuals, became instruments of official policy.
International power relations, defined, to that extent,
international cultural relations. (Iriye 1997, p151).

Ah, but that's part of the beauty of it. So you lose one
device and a few operatives. Big deal. You can buy a lot of
expendable schmucks for the price of a missile system. As long
as it's not one of your own nationals, what are the chances
that there would be any repercussions?
Compare with trying to devlop and deploy a nuclear
warhead/missile system undetected. You could do it overtly, if
you don't mind being targeted and having to deal with the
whole international politics kerfuffle, while the effort is in
process. But if you're planning to "get away" with something,
leaving an IR trail back to your own house is not an option.
