    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

Can we do a better job of finding truth? YES. Click "rshow55" for some things Lchic and I have done and worked for on this thread.

If the NYT thinks a corporate NYT officer can sign a letter saying that there have been no NYT employees on this thread - without at least thinking about consequences - I'd be surprised.

Some things would have to be sorted out face to face - I'll talk to a NYT lawyer if one is available.

I certainly can understand that the NYT would have concern for compromising sources - and I'd be prepared to respect that - and promise in an agreement to do so - if the total situation permitted me to function workably.

The right to privacy one right among a number. A letter acknowledging which posters were NYT reporters - and which were not - with an ….For a win-win situation my needs have to be accomodated, too.

Addressed already. See above.

I'd be perfectly happy to have this thread shut down today - that's been true for weeks.

You mean since Sept 17 ?

The kitchen may have gotten too hot in the past 5 weeks!

But I intend to get a "win-win" situation - or behave rationally in my own interest otherwise. With what few resources I may be able to muster. Who wouldn't?

Yeah, who wouldn’t want to have his cake and eat it too !

…But forget about that - I have to care about myself - and for stability - that means I have to care a little bit about you {?].

You have to take care of YOUR own “stability” too. Any other 'stability' -- Not dependent on or reciprocal to you !

And for stability - that has to be reciprocal. And, as a practical matter - stability involved reciprocal penalties, as well as benefits.

Your stability is your own stability. Again, Nothing reciprocal with anyone's (other than your world asset and family/friends). Can’t see how it could be reciprocal with NYT’s !

Your stability is NOT general, NYT's or the forum's “stability” ! And, Nothing “reciprocal” I see here.

Maybe people don't have to talk about them - but for stability they have to be there.

What ‘stability’ ? Whose stabiity ? Stability of the situation here or anything else is NOT dependent on or reciprocal to yours !

The fact is that every reasonably complicated human interaction involving cooperation is dynamically unstable unless people work in balanced ways to stabilize it.

Doesn’t it apply to “human interaction” that is essential, particularly for long-term commitments ? NO “human interaction” on this thread is so essential or long-term, I don't think : Posters are here today, gone tomorrow –- unlike of course, you and world asset lchic, and a few ‘addicted’ regulars. And anyone can walk away (gracefully or made to), and poof goes the ‘stable’ “human interaction.”

I know more about that than anybody else in the world - inadequate as I may be - and I'd like to get out of jail. Not leave so mangled and spun dry that I cannot function.

So far as I can gather, NoBody has put you “in jail” or "house arrest" -- that you need to get out of. IF you FEEL so, then step outside and see if someone (other than yourself) stops you.

Who has “mangled” you ? If NYT and its employees, take it up with them. IF on the forum, remember it’s a public forum where robust exchanges do take place, and nothing much is above a challenge. If worried about getting “mangled” here, try staying away -- might work.

Cast of Characters:

How many times a day you want to post the “Cast” ! Wasn't it only once in the OTHER ‘Wizard of OZ’ !

Note that in the "win-win" settlement I'm blocking out - I'm not asking for money. Just a letter that is honorable and honest from the points of view that "the average reader ( or stockholder ) of the New York Times" would be likely to respect.
