    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

Can we do a better job of finding truth? YES. Click "rshow55" for some things Lchic and I have done and worked for on this thread.

"...and save mankind thru the MD thread..."

- that isn't necessarily such a unrealistic objective - it depends on how much saving mankind needs - and how hard mankind is already working to save itself.

Gisterme , I think some of your postings have been directed to your effort to clarify things - as if you were in a position to make decisions that mattered to all or much of mankind. Intellectuals, after all, do a lot of as iffing .

A lot of people admire Thomas Friedman - who claims he has the best job in the world - and I think it is worth considering just how optimistic Friedman's THE LEXUS AND THE OLIVE TREE actually is. That book, written in 1999 is very optimistic. In terms of very many of the things that are bothering us now - Friedman argued that the world was saving itself - and that salvation in a secular sense seemed just around the corner.

People haven't known how to make the vision Friedman (and some other people) articulated actaully work. A workable harmony between the Lexus and the Olive Tree has eluded us.

If just a few things are missing - maybe "saving the world" in the sort of secular sense that Friedman might support might not be so elusive.

Here are some references to THE LEXUS AND THE OLIVE TREE on this thread prior to March 1, 2002.

It's party time ...... P.A.R.T.Y ..... Why? .... because I GOTTA *****

The current state of play in power games on the MD Forum:

  • ******

Gisterme and Rshow are camping in the desert, they set up their tent, and are asleep. Some hours later, Gisterme wakes his companion.

"Rshow, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.

"Rshow replies, "I see millions of stars."

"What does that tell you?" asks Gisterme.

Rshow ponders for a minute. "Astronomically speaking, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Timewise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, it's evident the Lord is all powerful and we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.

What does it tell you, POTUS Sabi?"

Gisterme is silent for a moment, then speaks.

"Rshow you dick-head, someone stole our tent."

    Cantabb hijacks Gis..termes sub

    spies Rhsow in the distance

    who needs help and assistance

"Rig for anti-NONSENSE running" bellows Cantabb from the conn

"Load tubes one and three we got him on the run",

"target locked" and "fire", the big fish on the wire

are moving to their target , things are looking dire

oops there's tragedy a looming but torpedos miss their quarry

"Due to Canonicity, your dots were not connected and I'm really very sorry".

Now I would prefer this forum to further the prospects of missile defence via a Union of World states using KAEP as a social welding tool but ... when in Rome one must do as those Romans inexorably do (provided the electricity is on!) ......

    Viva la dolce vita!

    Ciao!

Yet another meaningless post with over 10 oft-repeated self-references, links !

rshow55: Can we do a better job of finding truth? YES. Click "rshow55" for some things Lchic and I have done and worked for on this thread.

Same lchic would say: "...non-contributory to the header above in either the narrow or wider senses."
