    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

White House Ignored CIA Over Iraq Uranium Claim - CBS By REUTERS Filed at 0:39 a.m. ET http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/politics/politics-iraq-usa-weapons.html

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House ignored a request by the CIA to remove a statement in President Bush's State of the Union address that Iraq was seeking uranium from Africa for its nuclear weapons program, CBS Evening News reported on Thursday.

Bush and Rice Say C.I.A. Approved Uranium Comment By KIRK SEMPLE 12:15 PM ET http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/11/international/worldspecial/11CND-BUSH.html

The comments appeared intended to rebut news reports that said the C.I.A. was raising objections to the claim that Iraq tried to buy uranium in Africa.

People should look carefully at that image - including the expression on Secretary Powell's face.

We're dealing here with issues that matter much more than the question of what Clinton did and said about the Lewinsky matter. Lies about sex are pretty widely tolerated. Here we're dealing with evasions about the basic war making power of the United States. Issues central to the credibility of the United States in the world - something both our safety and our prosperity depend on.

I had reason to know a great deal about the Watergate matter - where impeachment was fully justified - and happened much too late. This is more serious.

This matters. There should be an investigation.

Bush and Rice Say C.I.A. Approved Uranium Comment By RICHARD W. STEVENSON with KIRK SEMPLE http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/11/international/worldspecial/11CND-WEAPONS.html

has replaced an earlier story with an identical title.

Bush and Rice Say C.I.A. Approved Uranium Comment By KIRK SEMPLE http://www.nytimes.com/2003/07/11/international/worldspecial/11CND-BUSH.html

The Semple piece has an interesting Associated Press image which the Richard W. Stevenson and Kirk Semple piece, which was posted a little later and is admirable in many other ways, lacks.

In news stories, people speak of the "5W's + H" approach.

Who? . . . What? . . . Where? . . . When? . . . Why? . . . and How?

HOW, exactly, did the world get into this mess?
