    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

I nominate robcatchburger to be 'it' of the current cast of Addam's family characters.

His facial expressions change but 'how can you tell?'

War isn't always nation building eg. Iraq's invasion of Kuwait; equally it’s not always nation destroying eg. surrender of Japan at the end of WWII. Sometimes it vanquishes both the defeated and the defeating power because it chokes off the liberty that is the source of civilization eg the German invasion of Russia in WWII. Resource shortages and competition is the father of war. Lies abound when resources are in short supply and the winner takes all including the truth. Except when the winner is the leading dempocracy, as then public and media pressure is such that truth prevails despite some minor dallying. Sometimes war is moral and right because 'their' state is diabolical (eg. pre WWII Germany) and 'ours' is concerned for our long term survival; the fact that the opposing government probably has WMD's and is definitely an imminent threat to non-islamic governments is reasonable justification for testing and ultimately overthrowing that government when it is found wanting. If the World had the strength to adopt such an attitude in 1938 against Germany the world would be a better place today.
