    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

One picture is reported to show a PoW, gagged and bound in netting, dangling from a forklift truck driven by a soldier. The American military also faces accusations of cruelty to prisoners. About two dozen detainees have taken their complaints to Amnesty International, the London-based human rights group, alleging that American and British soldiers hit and beat prisoners, and in one case used electric shocks. .But Amnesty International has not yet corroborated the information, which is being disputed by both the Pentagon and the British Ministry of Defense.
