    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

Can we do a better job of finding truth? YES. Click "rshow55" for some things Lchic and I have done and worked for on this thread.

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/05/30/opinion/30KRIS.html is important.

Does anybody really wonder why my instructions - under desperate enough conditions - were to "come in through the New York Times" ?

Does anybody really wonder why what I've asked for has been awkward, in spots, for the TIMES and for other people involved?

Does anybody really wonder why I've done the things I've done? - Well, people with the responsibility and connections shown by http://www.nytimes.com/2003/05/30/opinion/30KRIS.html could ask. I'd play straight with them. But on some key thigns - there would have to be meetings face to face for reasons anybody involved with "humint" should be clear about.

If photocells could be mass produced and deployed in large scale mass production at these low prices - the world would have an essentially unlimited supply of energy (transported as hydrogen) at 10$/barrel oil energy equivalent before transportation costs.

For 5% net efficiency - $2.36/square meter

For 10% net efficiency - $4.72/square meter

And a LOT of square meters.

That's amortizing units in 18 months or less.

Doesn't look especially hard - technically - or even that hard socio-technically.

Just a "simple" technical job - that I was trained to do - asked to do - could change the world.

Does anybody wonder why, for getting some things done - I find it essential to be able to speak clearly to Deutsche Bank Securities - or some similarly connected organization with power that extends beyond the reach of the United States Government?

Eisenhower would have been certain that was necessary now.

I'm doing my duty. Awkwardness and all. So is the New York Times. Not perfectly. But pretty damn well in spots.

Save Our Spooks By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF http://www.nytimes.com/2003/05/30/opinion/30KRIS.html is important - but at the level of patriotic, responsible, effective journalistic strategy - it deals with circumstances that should be clear.

Other newspapers and news media from outside the United States should also cover this situation - cover it clearly - heavily - and the news organizations involved should talk to each other - publicly to the maximum extent possible - with on-the-record comments from governments invited - and check this matter to closure.

If foundation support was necessary to fund the effort - people at the levels necessary should make a few phone calls - and get it done.

Some suggestions I made to lchic in September 2000 - after my attempt to meet with Howell Raines was deflected - would make sense to re-examine now.

The Cold War should be over - not just the start of a new dark age.

Most of the ideals and hopes people had when the UN was founded could be achieved practically and reasonably quickly now if leaders of nation states - including France, Germany, Russia, and China - took care to see that essential facts that matter enough that it ought to be their duty to be clear about them - get checked to closure.

Journalistic organizations - in the expected contact with governments - could get these things done in ways they should be proud to do.

(For a sense of "expected governmental contacts" between ranking journalists and governments, see Save Our Spooks By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF for examples of such contacts - which the NYT has in plenty)

Note: If I has a clear, true "cast of characters" for this thread - and clearance to talk clearly to people at the UN and to organizations such as Deutsche Bank Securities - I'd have a fair shot at accomplishing everything I promised Eisenhower I'd "do my damndest" to do.
