    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

SPITTING Honking .... Urinating in public ....

China - fines imposed to upgrade cultures approach to public health

A cultural matter of concern should be the eating utensils that move from 'mouth' to 'centre serving dish' ... a sure method of SARS transmission.

That Chinese toddler's clothing is designed for them to splatt - like small geese - on the ground everywhere might be a further point for concern. Some made in China infant_goods should be used there.

______________

Knowledge is the big advance in dealing with SARS .. that can live for a month outside the human hosts.

A public health upgrade is underway in China.

The reason for concern is seen by regular Chinese as not one of government interest in 'the people' of China - rather - Government concern regarding commerce and trade.

That medical staff came down with SARS illustrates that the old paradigm 'now wash your hands' to prevent spread of disease -- was, as ever, in need of review.

a science in the news posting:

"" An Australian woman formerly from Beijing said

? What is the difference between the chinese and Japanese - Vietnamese .... ?

She said the Chinese are 'individualist' 'competitive' and race against each other -- they would win the race filled with individual competitors; whereas the others are TEAM players and win the races over the Chinese when a team work is required.

---

A problem for China may be that they see everything from the financial perspective of the individual rather than having an holistic (whole picture) viewpoint.

It's fine to produce something and sell at lowest cost --- but --- when the cost of recycling polluted water, chemicals and sky are not built into the production cost of the product --- then the wider community are left with problems that eventually have to be resolved and paid for. ""

---------

Is the individualist rather than holistic also the way too many think wrt Nuclear materials?
