Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a
nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a
"Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed
considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense
initiatives more successful? Can such an application of
science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable,
necessary or impossible?

The NYT seems to have 'slipped-up badly' re the young
Walter-Mitty-Blair reporter.
The guy had assumed that 'lies' and shortcuts would get him
everywhere.
NYT had assumed that the guy would fall within the
professional code of ethics --- seemingly he missed class that
day!
Showalter is right about the need for checking.
If news-story is a process, then, a looped feedback system
a standard part of process - especially when the NYT became
aware of the guy's transgressions.
'book working_title - Blair who did not care' .... the
media have the capacity to 'make' even from the downside of
storyville!

The truth about Isreal is that no-one really cares anymore
... yawn ... http://www.nytimes.com/2003/05/11/opinion/11FRIE.html
... it's hard to understand why American tax payers throw $10m
into the place on a daily basis.
Statistically the Fundamentlists are doomed and out of
touch with the modern world -- they've run out of similars to
'import', have a heirachical class_system ... have lost
following within their own camp ... and the place is set to be
secular in a decade's time at current pace.
The USA with an upcoming deficit and budget crisis may well
be reflecting on poor foreign policy and cash-wastage as
'Isreal' as it thinks it knows it ... sinks in the abyss.

Missiles - Pakistan and India (the very SAME people) think
they've polluted their nations along with Kashmire
sufficiently so to scale down MD.
"" a senior Bush administration official met with Indian
leaders Saturday and said he was "cautiously optimistic" the
nuclear-armed neighbors were on the road to peace.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage met with
Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and then called on
the South Asian neighbors to "live side by side" and find a
way to end the separatist violence in the disputed Kashmir
region.
"We would like to see two great nations, India and
Pakistan, live side by side," he said. "It's a long trip to
get there, and I just hope we've begun a process."
Vajpayee surprised the subcontinent two weeks ago during a
speech in divided Kashmir by calling for renewed dialogue with
Islamabad.
Pakistan immediately accepted the peace overtures and the
two countries - which were on the brink of war at this time
last year - have since agreed to restore diplomatic and
transportation links.
Still, the violence resumed Saturday in Kashmir, the
disputed Himalayan province at the core of more than 50 years
of the enmity.
New Delhi also insisted Islamabad has not made sufficient
efforts to curb the crossings of Pakistan-based guerrillas
into Indian-controlled Kashmir to launch attacks. .....
