    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Then people, in Iraq and all over the world, need to insist that the Bush administration work hard to find humanly effective ways to "make the Iraqis smile" - to serve Iraqi needs, as they've promised to do.

Come the Revolution By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN http://www.nytimes.com/2003/04/02/opinion/02FRIE.html

Some basic information about differences, as well as similarities between people are worth knowing.

Fairy Story --- what if Saddam turns into a puff of smoke ... and like the genie ... pours himself each night, into the equiv of the genie bottle --- say a statue of himself ... entry via the left nostril ... He could overnight ... and using his mobile phone ... check on the status of his bank accounts in -- Switzerland, The Cook Islands, Lybia, .... etc ...

Wonder if his 'thugged-away fortune' will ever be returned to the peoples of Iraq?

" no valid reason to fight for Saddam's regime"

What if they believe they fight a foreign agressor and occupier?

What if they fight for their homeland, pride and dignity?

What if they fight those who destroyed vital civilian infrastructure of their country 12 years ago?

What if they fight those who imposed 12 years of inhuman sunctions mostly affectinmg their children?

What if a grown orphants of "Road of Death" want to meet face to face those they may want to revenge?

What if parents of trawmatised by two weeks bombing children want to express their feeling to "liberators"?

I wonder how many Americans would chose to fight and die for "Bushe's regime"?

Showalter --- are all the 'e-mail' systems in the USA 'OUT' for the duration?

Is Rummy doing it? Is he collecting and blocking everyone's mail? Or is the USA IT system being hacked by Saddam?

Almarst , you make points that people have to balance - but looking at what Saddam's regime has done - the points don't make much sense to me - no, I don't think Saddam's regime is worth fighting for and particularly in a lost cause.

I think there's a lot to be said against the Bush administration - sometimes I think Krugman is a model of restraint - but looking at the situation now - it isn't clear that Bush and Blair are doing too badly - by any historical standards.

I think the Iraqis should let the Americans in, and insist on decent conduct.

Though there are plenty of bad things to say about Americans - this war has been as carefully and humanely fought as any in history.

If we're careful - we may not be so far from a time when war can be almost obsolete - and a lot of the concerns you have can be well served.

Raw hatred of the United States not being an interest you really ought to hold onto too tightly.
