    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

Read Debates, a new Web-only feature culled from Readers' Opinions, published every Thursday.

Can we do a better job of finding truth? YES. Click "rshow55" for some things Lchic and I have done and worked for on this thread.

Almarst , lchic and I have been very concerned with problems of press function for a long time. http://www.mrshowalter.net/a_md2000s/md2088_2089.htm

We've discussed many of the problems in terms of Weaver's News and the Culture of Lying 5943-44 http://forums.nytimes.com/webin/WebX?8@28.4qGpaSyu6vx.2374915@.f28e622/7390

Here's http://www.mrshowalter.net/a_md2000s/md2088_2089.htm , with its main links working , and other links available by date at http://www.mrshowalter.net/calendar1.htm :

rshowalter - 08:30am Apr 8, 2001 EST (#2088 of 2089) http://www.mrshowalter.net/a_md2000s/md2088_2089.htm

"I contacted CNN, and they referred me to an individual working on Ted Turner's dealings with respect to Russian Television.

"After a short conversation, I sent that individual the following email, with linkages. I set it out here, as a summary of conversations; to make sure that people are "reading from the same page" and because I'm afraid that it will not be read or tended to. -- It would, I believe, be read if people on the Russian side wanted it to be -- as a point of contact and discussion between negotiating individuals and groups that need a sense of each other's concerns.

Dear Mr. XXXXXXX:

"I appreciate the chance to send you these references.

"On September 25, I had a dialog from 7:30am rshowalt 9/25/00 7:32am .... to 5:28 pm rshowalt 9/25/00 5:28pm with "becq" --who (then felt) quite sure was William Jefferson . . .

"The NYT - Science- Missile Defense thread has continued intensely since that time. It is large, too large for anyone but a dedicated specialist to read -- but if you sample it anywhere, you'll see good quality ------ people have taken it seriously, and it represents a serious effort, on my part, and, in variuos ways, on the part of people connected to the NYT.

"For some time, a "almarst_2001" who (I then felt) was Vladimir Putin has been communicating with us on the thread -- he took a "vacation" for a time to so so. http://forums.nytimes.com/webin/WebX?8@28.4qGpaSyu6vx.2374915@.f28e622/10537 We've talked about the issue of press freedom (there is, in addition to the open thread, much conversation between me and "lunarchick" ) an issue of deep important to THE NEW YORK TIMES. I believe the correspondence is appropriate for Mr. Turner to know about -- because of the interest expressed by the Russian leader, and because concerns he expresses may be worth your knowing about.

"To negotiate a complex deal with the Russians involves many barriers -- some anger provoking. "Lunarchick" and I are working, and working hard, to get past those barriers.

"For over a decade now the beacon of a free press in Russia has been the independent Television station NTV. "---2028 lunarchick 4/6/01 5:53am
