    Missile Defense

Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI all over again?

And they're afraid to question our other military policies, too. So that the American people, who are nice people in very many other ways, acquiesce in some gruesome behavior that was probably not justified during the cold war, and is certianly not justified now.

Some of the persuasive force is going to have to happen from outside the United States, for reasons I referred to in MD9902 rshowalter 9/29/01 11:07am . .

Without some pressure, and information flows, from the outside, how on earth is the change needed supposed to happen?

The "ways" of "ascending" Western "civilization":

"Franklin D. Roosevelt's fortune was inherited from his maternal grandfather Warren Delano. In 1830 he was a senior partner of Russell & Company. It was their merchant fleet which carried Sassoon's opium to China and returned with tea." - http://www.stormfront.org/truth_at_last/archives/sassoon.htm

Lot of good about the US, anyway, almarst . Don't have to deny any ugliness at all to say that. Nor is there much contradiction between the good and the bad parts. The bad parts could be cleaned up with little or no loss to the good.

We had an interchange, discussed and linked in MD7389 rshowalter 7/24/01 8:18pm

and it included an "exercise in communication" that I felt might be of use for Putin's staff.

If Putin's staff was capable of working through such an exercise, some things might clarify, and become possible, that are not clear and not possible today.

almarst-2001 9/29/01 7:46pm . . . I'm not an anti-war protester, myself, though I respect them.

But for some basic changes, you need to be able to change the thinking of

"the average reader of THE NEW YORK TIMES . . .

and then (and this is harder) the thinking of less elite groups, including

"the average reader of The National Inquirer"

Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs - - as a source of constraint. And how, with knowledge of enough constraints there is hope of finding solutions that can actually work.
