    Missile Defense

Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI all over again?

Afghans need Voice of America ?

Pity Saffire hasn't heard about the BBC the credibility of whom is far higher than that of the USA.

The world is interconnected. Shols my _____ wrote me from China:

Subject: Letter to President Bush

"I got this email from a very good friend of mine in the UK whose husband was in the World Trade Centre the morning of the attack and is lucky to have escaped with his life. Out of respect for his experience I'm passing this on."

Dear Friends:

A great tragedy has befallen our nation. A catastrophe that leaves none of our lives untouched. Many innocent lives were lost due to a senseless act of terror and violence. Although this horrific event may outrage many, and rightly so, it cannot be justified or corrected through more violence. Another senseless act in retaliation will not repair the damage done, nor bring back those who were lost.

President Bush,

We the undersigned encourage you to take responsible, peaceful action in bringing the terrorists to justice. Please seriously consider the negative ramifications of continued killing and perpetuating the cycle of violence. Although many lives have already been lost, MANY MORE CAN STILL BE SAVED.

Senator Joseph Biden, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee Senator Biden (D–Delaware) is a key player in helping determine our country's response to this terrorist activity. He answers some of the questions that America is asking in light of the terrorist attacks.

Simple, basic points, that people shouldn't have to be told. I was talking of nukes here, but the subject was crafting a workable peace, in general. A thought experiment made sense to me then, and does now.

EVERY competent negotiator has to know this, and in the areas where negotiations work well, the parties do. Ever tried to control things, with all pluses and no minuses, or all minuses and no plusses? . . . Either way, if things are going in the wrong direction, there's no reversing them. That's stupid.

Basic points, that people need to know, understand, and remember. And think about as they watch events:

Gusts of emotion can make people feel better, for a while. But perhaps it would be safer, and permit more beauty in the real world, if we grew up a little?
