Missile Defense

Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI all over again?

It seems to me that the Bush administration ought to be prepared to discuss this issue, very explicitly, if it is to ask for help -- or trust - - in a war on terrorism. Especially when the actions and stances of this administration, exemplified, for instance, by gisterme's writing here, are considered in detail.

Look how the loss of 5000 people, and some buildings, have effected us. How can we ask people to ignore the much more terrible means by which we are threatening them , and have been doing so, habitually, for half a century?

This board can't make that case effectively -- but it would seem to me that some leaders of nation states, who care about the matter, should seriously consider making the case. Now, at a level that wasn't true before, people are paying attention.

Now that things have gotten more serious - - now that our guts have been wrenched - - it makes sense to get serious, and see what it will actually require, to sort out problems in the world that deeply compromise our safety.

That means working on the basis of things that are true.
