    Missile Defense

Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI all over again?

What a great job MSNBC has done with http://www.msnbc.com/news/warroom_front.asp?0sp=n5b1

almarst , I'm deeply honored that you're back.

I'm having to spend some time reading, and thinking, and sorting some things out. This is a hopeful, but dangerous time.

almarst , did you read the Nuclear Threat Initiative's mission statement? Think what would happen, if they really did what they say there, with courage and flexibility, and multiple pathing when it makes sense, with the stakes as they are, to investigate different possibilities?

They have the funding and connections to do what Ted Turner asked them to do, with the world situation evolving as it is. rshowalter 9/4/01 11:11am

It's going to take me a little while to respond to some of the beautiful postings here, but while I do, points in these postings occur to me:

We need "islands of technical fact" that are "beyond politics" but that can constrain the logic of political discourse -- so that lies cannot be so easily told and sold. We can work for practical improvements, on a well grounded basis, from there.

Can pages speak now? It sound ridiculous now. But I have the same faith in believing oneday the pages on the screens will interactive with me, as that in seeing oneday the missiles lauched from Alaska destroying the incoming warheads, with her intelligences, or whatsoever called.

.. should read "with her alluring intelligences" .. so said the C..I..A in a todayPost above. If there's an alluring missile, then she, would have to have an alluring voice ... perhaps the velvet scrubbing brush vocal sound ?

Bwsh is so stimulating that our Primate Prime Minister has cut 5 days off his upcoming USA tour. Howard is due to call an election .. riding on the sheep's back (USA shillyshallying re Lamb & Free Trade), and riding on the backs of illegal immigrants.

Anyone thought to put a value on the Indian Ocean's sunken ship of refugees?

These guys have just featured in the Norwegian Election, will in the up coming Aussie election, and perhaps others upcoming in the SouthEast Pacific. additional to this is their value as educated/skilled/breathing families/people.

It is impractical to be too dismissive about the value of people. And also ugly .

We're at a time of great danger, where there are signs of group insanity, and the grossest kind of bad faith, in the control group of the United States government. Perhaps it only appears that way. But it is a time to be careful, where judgement ( http://www.wisc.edu/rshowalt/sermon.html ) is vital.

We're dealing with issues of war and peace, hope and dispair, life and death, and some of Tolstoy's thoughts, seen in a hopeful way, are relevant here.

MD6925 rshowalter 7/11/01 12:44pm .... (and some postings following.)

We need to be careful (in all the senses of that word) and responsible as human beings -- practical, not fatalistic.

These are vital issues - - issues of life and death - - with new opportunities and challenges, in our time.

We have reason to be careful. With these stakes, and mistakes and lies of the magnitude involved here being made and told, the world could end.

We can see that it doesn't, and we must.
