Missile Defense

Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI all over again?

But sometimes, it seems like they are "talking past each other."

Here's some significant evidence of that. There wasn't a complete and whole-hearted "meeting of the minds" in the recent meeting between Bush and Putin, though it was productive.

Bush was surprised at Putin's reactions -- where if he'd been better briefed, he wouldn't have been. A good meeting might have been even better.

For a deal that works well, each side has to see the other's point of view -- but more than that -- when there are crucial disagreements about facts , then, for stability and right decisions, the facts need to be determined.

Sometimes gisterme has seemed to be hostile to the idea of checking gisterme 6/25/01 3:10pm , which I've emphasized, because I think it is important. rshowalter 6/25/01 4:08pm

But if lies are in the national interest of the United States of America then it seems to me that something is wrong. Especially when the issues involve war and peace, and we are claiming to be peaceful.
