    Missile Defense

Russian military leaders have expressed concern about US plans for a national missile defense system. Will defense technology be limited by possibilities for a strategic imbalance? Is this just SDI all over again?

Looks as if the oil deal (ft.com) above re Putin might relate to exploration. On a science program i saw a compter device. It read in the underground 'topography' (wrong word), and noted where river systems lay underground etc. This cut costs, stopped a lot of costly and unnecessary drilling .. the geologists had a more complete picture of what lay under the ground, and could direct drilling to the points that would most likely give a 'strike' result.

They showed how someone had drilled .. were meters away from a strike, but had had a dry run .. and then abandoned an area that would have given them economic joy.

That Putin didn't go for an IMF loan shows a reasoned sensible approach .. those loans only go to the countries who input & are hard to repay.

Noted the women of Bangladesh have their 'GREENBANK' could be an idea for other women perhaps ? It has enabled the Indian women to put their children into secondary school/Tertiary education and raise them out of poverty.

I'd give Putin high grades on economic policy and honest accounting -- under difficult circumstances.

Today, especially:

Civility and Double Standards by Robert Parry April 25, 2001 http://www.consortiumnews.com/042501a.html

" It seems like just yesterday when the national news media was quick to accuse leading politicians of lying. But George W. Bush has changed that, with journalists now won to the “civility” that Bush vowed to bring to Washington.

Goebbels and mass mind control: Part Two How PR opinion-shapers undermine environmental protection by Carla Binion http://www.onlinejournal.com/Special_Reports/Binion042501/binion042501.html

April 25, 2001— "In part one, we examined the fact that Hitler's propagandist, Joseph Goebbels, admired Edward Bernays, a self-proclaimed founder of the public relations industry. Goebbels used Bernays' book "Crystallizing Public Opinion" in his campaign against Germany's Jewish population. Now we'll look at specific propaganda techniques shared by Goebbels and today's corporate PR teams, and at how those techniques undermine today's environmental movement.

" Public relations can be used for good or ill. When PR spin is used to convince people that harmful things are good for them, or to turn people against their own best interests, it is used for ill. Goebbels practiced propaganda as a black art.
