    Missile Defense

Technology has always found its greatest consumer in a nation's war and defense efforts. Since the last attempts at a "Star Wars" defense system, has technology changed considerably enough to make the latest Missile Defense initiatives more successful? Can such an application of science be successful? Is a militarized space inevitable, necessary or impossible?

I've got everything copied.

lchic 2/21/02 5:49am DOES contain the big question -- WHY DO LIES PERSIST ?

A big part of the answer is that conventions, deeply entrenched, say that checking, when it is awkward -- is superseded by other considerations.

But there are some OTHER big questions, too, and almarst asked some important ones. MD11669 almarst-2001 2/20/02 8:40pm had very good ones.

Almarst , have you thought of communicating those questions to other people? If such questions were adressed to American leaders, and European leaders - - dialog might make for adjustments.

Kate_nyt giveth, and she taketh away.

was told to go to the Science - Missile Defense forum in kate_nyt "Favorite Poetry" 9/24/00 1:27pm ... and have been here since. My emphasis, from the beginning, has been on nuclear disarmament, with missile defense as a means to an end, and as an interesting issue. Almarst has dealt with the issues discussed on this thread in the same spirit, and gisterme has, as well.

Both Alex and myself were blocked late September - heaps of folks were blocked .... the Terrorists were winning .... unfortunately the Terrorists who spread the magic powder of death ... are now thought to possibly be a sector of the US army ...

"The big question regarding MD is here - lchic 2/21/02 5:49am - if everybody is saying space wars don't work and are a sham .. then why isn't the USA Congress listening and placing it's monetary allocations towards more urgent and necessary matters?"

Eisenhower would have been saddened, but he'd know the answer. Or at least he would, if he were clear on the anwer to a logically prior question:

After Eisenhower left office, warning us in his Farewell Addresss http://www.geocities.com/~newgeneration/ikefw.htm how much directly supervised control did U.S. Presidents, and the Congress, have on the nuclear establishment that ran the core of our Cold War? The organization that made the THREATS TO USE NUCLEAR WEAPONS: The Sixteen Known Nuclear Crises of the Cold War, 1946-1985 http://scienceforpeace.sa.utoronto.ca/WorkingGroupsPage/NucWeaponsPage/Documents/ThreatsNucWea.html

There was practically no detailed, operational control on this "shadow government" -- for forty years.

If Eisenhower had known that, he'd be able to predict exactly what happened, in key details. We should be able to do so, as well.

The Cold War should be over . We have some messes to clean up. With understanding, it shouldn't be all that difficult, and it should be possible to do so justly and safely.

Lchic asks . . . "why isn't the USA Congress listening and placing it's monetary allocations towards more urgent and necessary matters?"

The answer is that they've been "out of the loop" for many, many years.

We have a mess. It needs to be fixed.

TRUTH is STRANGER than FICTION!

When things are strange enough, the number of possibilities get narrowed down . . . if people trouble to look.
